I updated some of the internals that run the site this morning, this should allow for better monitoring and improved stability. There shouldn’t be any noticeable effects from this update (other than the site hopefully not going down due to running out of memory…), but let me know if anything seems awry.

Late last night the site went out to lunch because it ran out of memory. After it came back up from that there was a bit of a misconfiguration causing some database issues. Working on getting it back up now. More info as soon as it’s available. Sorry for the inconvenience!

The bug when switching between the most active tabs has been resolved. If you notice any further issues switching between the different views, please let me know.
And, hey, while I was at it, I figured why not make it a banner day and fix the group discussions so they order by the last post, rather than the time they were created. That’d certainly make sense, wouldn’t it? Only downside is it’s not retroactive. So… going forward, as discussions are commented on, they’ll then move to the top of the list.
Ok, that last part’s a lie. I went in and updated the db so now all discussions should show up in the new, improved order. Yay!

Just a quick note, I fixed the caching problem that was preventing activity summaries from updating properly. Should be good now, but if you notice any problems, please let me know!

A lot of you have been writing to let me know that there’s an inconsistency in the activity summary that appears on the left hand side of your user page. This is caused by some problems with the caching mechanism I implemented when I moved to the new provider. For the time being I’ve gone in and cleared out the cached files, so the data should be up to date as of the time I’m writing this, however, once you start adding more activities it will be out of date again. I’ll hopefully get a chance to look into the actual cause of the issue sometime tonight. Sorry for the inconvenience.

So the site update seems to have gone off pretty smoothly (minus the ugly broken page at Dreamhost while the DNS transferred). There are a few minor bugs, but nothing earth-shattering. One thing I’ve noticed is the RSS and Atom feeds are still slamming the site (actually it’s the search engines constantly requesting feeds for every possible page that’s slamming the site). For the time being I’ve turned the feeds off until I can get a proper caching solution implemented. Hopefully that will alleviate some of the slowness we’re seeing on the new host right now.
So far I’m exceedingly pleased with the new host, even under heavy load the site isn’t going down. It’s a bit slow in places, but still available which is a good thing. More to come!

Everything is transferred over to the new host, DNS has been switched, but might take awhile to propagate. I did have a nice friendly message set up at the old site, but it seems to have come down in the process of switching the DNS. Hopefully Dreamhost can restore that, but if not, never fear, within a few hours everyone should be hitting the new, improved host!

Just a heads up, at some point today I’ll be taking the site down to move it over to the new host. This will basically involve turning off access to the current site, backing up the data and user specific files (uploaded images), transferring them over to the new site, and then updating DNS. Once the DNS updates go through you’ll see the site in it’s new and hopefully much improved home!
Sorry for this bit of downtime, with any luck it will be the last to come for a long time. The blog will still be available during the move, so feel free to check back here for status updates.
