I doubt anyone will be particularly shocked by this, but the time has come for WeEndure to shut down. I haven’t had time to spend on the site for many years. For most of that time, that wasn’t much of a problem; the site ran relatively smoothly without much intervention on my part. Obviously new features weren’t being added, but the core functionality has always been there, and always worked. However, as I’m sure those of you who are still here have noticed, for the past year, spammers have been having their way with things. Unfortunately, at this point I don’t have the time to devote to prevent these spam attacks and you all deserve better.
So, where do we go from here? Well, first, the site will remain active until February 10th. So you can keep using it as usual up until then. More importantly, your data is your data and I want to be sure you have access to it. For that, you can go to http://archive.weendure.com, and download all of your activities. The archive functionality will remain available for at least a year. One thing to note, the data archived is a periodic snapshot from the site, so it may not be in sync with the absolute latest data on the live site (at least while the live site is still active, after the 15th I’ll take one final snapshot that will have the last data activities ever logged, *sniff*).
If you’re looking for another site to track your activities, I highly recommend Strava, especially if you use a GPS on your runs/rides (and if not, and you’ve got a smart phone, they’ve got great mobile apps as well). They built almost everything I ever imagined building into the We Endure (if only I had the time and funding ).
If you’ve got any questions or concerns, please, email me.
Thanks for a great 7 years, now get out there and ride (or run! or swim!).
I updated some of the internals that run the site this morning, this should allow for better monitoring and improved stability. There shouldn’t be any noticeable effects from this update (other than the site hopefully not going down due to running out of memory…), but let me know if anything seems awry.
Late last night the site went out to lunch because it ran out of memory. After it came back up from that there was a bit of a misconfiguration causing some database issues. Working on getting it back up now. More info as soon as it’s available. Sorry for the inconvenience!
The bug when switching between the most active tabs has been resolved. If you notice any further issues switching between the different views, please let me know.
And, hey, while I was at it, I figured why not make it a banner day and fix the group discussions so they order by the last post, rather than the time they were created. That’d certainly make sense, wouldn’t it? Only downside is it’s not retroactive. So… going forward, as discussions are commented on, they’ll then move to the top of the list.
Ok, that last part’s a lie. I went in and updated the db so now all discussions should show up in the new, improved order. Yay!
A lot of you have been writing to let me know that there’s an inconsistency in the activity summary that appears on the left hand side of your user page. This is caused by some problems with the caching mechanism I implemented when I moved to the new provider. For the time being I’ve gone in and cleared out the cached files, so the data should be up to date as of the time I’m writing this, however, once you start adding more activities it will be out of date again. I’ll hopefully get a chance to look into the actual cause of the issue sometime tonight. Sorry for the inconvenience.
So the site update seems to have gone off pretty smoothly (minus the ugly broken page at Dreamhost while the DNS transferred). There are a few minor bugs, but nothing earth-shattering. One thing I’ve noticed is the RSS and Atom feeds are still slamming the site (actually it’s the search engines constantly requesting feeds for every possible page that’s slamming the site). For the time being I’ve turned the feeds off until I can get a proper caching solution implemented. Hopefully that will alleviate some of the slowness we’re seeing on the new host right now.
So far I’m exceedingly pleased with the new host, even under heavy load the site isn’t going down. It’s a bit slow in places, but still available which is a good thing. More to come!
